Sokoto State Government Spends 30 Million Naira To Conducts Mass Wedding For 125 Couples

The Sokoto State Government on Friday in Sokoto conducted a mass wedding for 125 couples.

The wedding prayer (Fatiha) was conducted at the Government House, Sokoto.

The ceremony was presided over by Governor Aliyu Wamakko and the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, who was represented by Rilwanu Bello, the Magajin Rafin Sokoto.

Mr. Wamakko said that the gesture was aimed at further reducing the problems associated with the high number of unmarried youths. He urged the new couples to uphold the trust reposed in them by the state government.
The governor also appealed to wealthy individuals to complement the efforts of the state government in this direction.

“I must also urge the beneficiaries to engage in meaningful activities rather than idling away, or engaging in executive begging,” Wamakko said.

Speaking at the occasion, the Sultan of Sokoto commended the state government for the gesture, adding that it would further reduce the problems associated with indifference of youths to marriage.

The Sultan also decried the prevalence of obnoxious traditions preventing some youths from getting married.
The commissioner for social welfare, Zubairu Yari, said that the mass wedding gulped N30 million.
Dahiru Mohammed and Amina Shehu, who spoke on behalf of the couples, commended the state government for the gesture.

They promised to uphold the trust and confidence reposed in them.

“We will try and live in line with the Islamic injunctions,” they said.
