Rivers rose to fame through performing on various variety and comedy shows, from “Candid Camera” to “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson. She went on to host a rival late-night talk show, “The Late Show”, leading to animosity from her mentor Johnny Carson.

The comedian was nearly as well-known for her plastic surgeries as she is for her comedy. Her 2009 book “Men Are Stupid...And They Like Big Boobs: A Woman’s Guide to Beauty Through Plastic Surgery” offered insight into her experiences under the knife. She was also featured in three episodes of “Nip/Tuck”.

Mark Wahlberg, known then as Marky Mark, appeared on “The Joan Rivers Show” in 1992. During the four-year run of the show, Rivers was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host, which she won in 1990.

Rivers presented “Comedy Roast with Joan Rivers” in 2009 at the annual MIPCOM television and entertainment market in Cannes, France. She herself was the subject of a Comedy Central Roast in 2009 in which Kathy Griffin, Jeffrey Ross, and others poked fun at the comedy legend.

As part of her “Diary of a Mad Diva” (2014) book tour, Rivers poses at Bookends Bookstore in Ridgewood, NJ. “Diary of a Mad Diva” employs Rivers’s acerbically funny voice to narrate stories from her life. This work of non-fiction is just one of Rivers’s many print publications, from “Having a Baby Can Be a Scream” (1974) to “I Hate Everyone...Starting with Me” (2012).

On Jimmy Fallon’s first night hosting “The Tonight Show”, Joan Rivers returned to the show for the first time since her falling out with Johnny Carson.

Rivers and her daughter, Melissa, have been regulars on awards show red carpets, critiquing celebrity fashion with lines both generous and cutting.

Rivers wanted to be an actress when she was young, and she fulfilled that goal after her success as a comedian -- though sometimes playing herself, as she did on "Nip/Tuck," with Julian McMahon, left, and Dylan Walsh.

Kathy Griffin is one of many comedians who can cite Rivers as an influence. Like Rivers, Griffin is known for mocking celebrities at various events. Here, she and Rivers share a stage during a Rivers roast in 2009.

Joan and her daughter Melissa co-hosted the reality television show “Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?” from 2011-2014. The show follows the mother-daughter duo as they work on their family, social, and professional lives.

In her 2010 documentary, “Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work”, Rivers exposed her struggle to remain relevant and her tenacity in continuing to perform her stand-up act. The film offers intimate insight into Rivers’s personal and professional journey through the world of comedy and entertainment.
