Being into a gay relationship is officially illegal and banned in the Federal Republic of Nigeria where it is considered a crime and punishable with 14 years in jail. But this has not stopped the daughter of the late Nigerian billionaire, Abimbola Fernandez from taking the bold step of announcing her status on social media. On the 4th of February, 2016, Abimbola Fernandez took to her Instagram account to confess to her being into a lesbian relationship encouraging the LGBTQ community to fly its flag.

She wrote on her Instagram page:
‘Actually I don’t have to
prove anything to anyone. My private life is my private life as is my
account numbers etc I refuse to engage. Trying to shame someone for who
they befriend based on sexuality is absolutely horrific and might be
illegal stateside. My father loved his children no matter what.#LGBTQ fly your flags 
never let anyone shame you.’
In what some have described as a lame and hypocritical attempt to defend herself before her audience and curry some favour and sympathy, Abimbola refused to address the fact that she also severally shamed her step siblings for what is considered their own private lives as well and she is now taking to the media to cry out after being given the same treatment she gave others. Abimbola condemned Koye for being a cripple who does nothing but sell the sex-enhancing drug Viagra for a livelihood, see the snapshot below where she describes Koye as a crippled Viagra seller and Christina a marijuana-selling retard:
(Christina and Koye are two of the three children the late Fernandez had with his long marriage to the American Barbara Joyce). How can someone in the habit of shaming others for their choices turn around and complain when given the same treatment?
Observers ask how someone being paralyzed should be a crime or any fault at all and how has trying to make a living a source of shame? Some others feel she is simply trying to deflect attention from the lingering conflict she started with a principal member of the Fernandez family.
Although she is now trying to make an inroad into the Hollywood community where LGBTQ is fully allowed, close watchers say Abimbola should not try to distract everyone from the main issue on ground: her lifestyle, duplicity and manipulative behaviour which broke her father’s heart and turned some of her closest defenders to sworn foes, even some of those presently in her camp who are still masquerading as her friends.
Before the great Fernandez breathed his last, one of his sources of constant worries was this daughter of his. Two weeks before he died, he got to know of Abimbola’s lesbian relationship and her plans to get married. The grand old man was totally shattered and some close family sources told us the shocking news might have precipitated the demise of the Belgium-based billionaire. This was a man who was spent the last four months of his life in the hospital and she did not come to see him, not even once. It is thus interesting to relatives who knew what she did that period that she is now painting a different scenario on social media of how much she loved him.
The late billionaire, Chief Antonio Braimoh Deinde Fernandez, was a globally respected figure. But unknown to many, the deceased entrepreneur who was friends with the most powerful and richest people on earth had a very turbulent relationship with his children, especially his last daughter and child, Abimbola. His romantic adventure with a Black American woman named Sandra Price (whom he later renamed Aduke) produced two children: Atinuke and Abimbola. Atinuke is in the United Kingdom and is reportedly not on talking terms with her younger sister, Abimbola.
Abimbola is known to many Nigerians as an aspiring musician but her relationship with her father was below stellar and far from impressive. In the snapshot below, she is seen complaining bitterly about him and calling her father ’90 and miserable’:

The late Fernandez stood firmly against any homosexual relationship in his family and his daughter now trying to paint another picture is against all he stood for. At no time did he approve of, or accept the daughter’s lesbianism lifestyle
From her scandalous lifestyle to her insistence of going almost nude to promote her music career (which the father vehemently opposed), she was a constant thorn in his flesh. But nothing really shattered her father’s heart as her foray into lesbianism. Abimbola insisted she loved her partner and planned to marry her by the time she turned 30, see snapshots below.

Before the late Fernandez passed on, he got to know of Abimbola’s lesbianism lifestyle. This was how a family member present at the heart-rendering moment put it:
‘Chief got to know of Abimbola’s lesbian partner but only a few weeks to his death. He cursed her and said to us there never to mention her name in his presence again. He cried so hard. It was a distraught time for us all. ‘
Abimbola never cared about breaking her father’s heart about her love for her girlfriend despite the man giving her all she wanted and her Instagram post shows she has not changed her stance. All this is happening barely six months after Chief Fernandez’s death. It is surely a very trying time for the Fernandez family and what will happen next is what all observers are musing about but the news that one of Nigeria’s most famous daughters is proudly a lesbian is one that will shock not a few Nigerians sparking a new debate over the draconian law against the practice. It is also unclear how receptive Nigerians will be of her music as Nigeria is one of the most homophobic nations in the world.
