DG of NDLEA, Mrs. Roli Bode-George |
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Anambra has declared a man popularly called ``Uche Baron’’ in Onitsha Main Market wanted for illicit drug dealing.
Mr Sule Momodu, NDLEA’s Commander in the state told newsmen in Awka on Tuesday that the agency on Aug. 20 raided the suspect’s warehouse in the market and recovered cannabis weighing 109.800kg.
He said that the suspect who hailed from Ndoni in Rivers escaped and has been on the run since the raid.
Momodu, however, said that the baron’s brother-in-law, from Okwe in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo, who also deals in the business had been arrested.
However,
an alleged agent of the suspect, Ugochukwu Chukwu, 30, was arrested in
the raid. Mr Momodu said that 109.8 kg of cannabis was recovered from Mr
Chukwu, who is a brother-in-law to the wanted fugitive.
He said that Mr Chukwu would soon be arraigned, while appealing to
judges to assist the agency in the war against drug offenders.
“Our cases are well prepared, and they are water-tight,” he said. “We
look forward to getting justice. We want a situation where drug
offenders will get jail terms from 15 to 25 years or life imprisonment.”
He urged members of the public to be on the lookout for the fugitive.
“Those in the Onitsha main market know him,” he said. “We don’t want to
invade the market for obvious reasons; but we have the resources and the
power to do that.”
``He will serve as a deterrent to others. We have enough evidence to secure his prosecution, to get jail term,’’ he said.
Momodu commended Gov. Willie Obiano’s encouragement and support to the agency in its effort to rid the state of criminal elements.
``We will work hard to help the state government achieve this objective,’’ he said. (NAN)
