One Miss Chinaza Jona, a native of Mbaise in Imo State, who lived in Gyadina, also known as Akaraka, a suburb of Abuja, was allegedly killed in cold blood by her lover and live-in male mate, one Nnaji Sunday Okechukwu, in her room recently.
The gruesome murder of the late Chinaza was revealed by her cousin, Mrs. Justina Ugwoke, who explained that before her cousin had her head almost cut-off by her lover, the couple used to fight regularly. She also added that Mr. Nnaji warned her to desist from coming to settle their disputes whenever they were fighting, just as she added that he used to threaten to ensure that head rolled before he would leave her cousin.
However, Mrs. Ugwoke said on the night when her cousin was killed, her cousin’s neighbours called to inform her that the duo were fighting as usual and later they saw the man, going out with their seven-month-old baby. As she went there, according to her, the door was locked. She, therefore, ran to Eze Nd’Igbo in the village, who used to call them to order to report to him of the development. “When we found the key to the room, we opened the door and saw my cousin, lying dead with her head almost cut off.” The eze Nd’Igbo alerted the police from Gwagwa Division, who came immediately, took pictures and took the corpse to hospital, she explained.
Mrs. Ugwoke further disclosed that her cousin, the late Chinaza, informed her that the reason they used to fight regularly was due to her refusal of Nnaji’s proposal that they should use their only baby girl for money-making ritual. She admitted that Nnaji was the real father of the baby girl, judging from resemblance but quickly added that they used to calm him down by telling him that he could take the child when she comes of age.
Confirming the ugly incident, Chief Peter Nwachukwu, the Eze Nd’Igbo in the village, admitted seeing the lifeless body of the lady, who was suspected to have almost been beheaded by her lover. Explaining that the lady was from Okwuato in Abo-Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, the chief added that, as he was rendered helpless by what he saw, he had to invite the police.
“There is nothing I could do other than to call the police that took the body away. I saw the corpse and the head was almost cut off. The suspicion is that she was killed by her lover and they had a baby girl whom he ran away with in addition to the lady’s property. Until the incident, he had been living in the lady’s house,” the chief explained.
Community intervention
The chairman of Igbo community in the village, Chief Joshua Nwanaga, said one John Odo called him about 10:30pm to inform him that the duo was fighting. About 11:15pm, according to him, one Mr. Daniel Ahotu called him on the same issue, and about 12:58am, one Mr. Francis Ekegbede called to inform him that the lady had been killed.
As he got there, he said he met the police and Eze Igbo And a little crowd. About 3:00am, the police took the corpse to the hospital. But Nnaji left with their only daughter and had not been located at the time of this report.
It was the members of the community that raised money with which the corpse was conveyed home to avoid burying the corpse outside its home town, contrary to Igbo tradition.
The late Chinaza, until her untimely death, this reporter gathered, operated a drinking spot. However, Abuja Metro found that arrests had been made and were already yielding useful information to the police.
Police confirm
The Divisional Crime Officer of the area, DSP Okeren Famous, who spoke to Abuja Metro at a recent event in Abuja confirmed the incident. He informed that the suspect ran away with their seven-month-old baby and is still being wanted for interrogation.
However, the Abuja Command Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO) DSP H. A. Daniel, when contacted informed that the matter had been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the command.
