For Bearing 4 Female Children And Not Giving Him A Male Child, Man Sets Wife Ablaze In Ikwo Ebonyi State

Governor Of Ebonyi State Martin Elechi

A patent medicine dealer, Mr. Paul Nwakpuke, who hails from Onugou Alike Ikwo in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State is now in the net of the Ebonyi State Police Command for allegedly setting his wife, Monica, ablaze for allegedly giving birth to four female children.

Orient Daily gathered that Paul who married  Monica after impregnating her in her teens was said to have become infuriated with the wife when she consecutively gave birth to four female children without a male child.

Paul had earlier sent his wife away to her parent’s house but on Monday 2nd June, 2014, Paul was alleged to have mobilized suspected assassins who he led to  his parents-in-law house with the intention to harm her.

They were said to have laid ambush for Monica in the night waiting for her when she would come out to ease herself and when she eventually came out that night, three men who had been waiting for her rushed at her while one of them slapped her repeatedly on her face and fore-head before forcing her into a standby motorcycle and drove off with her.

As they drove off, when they got to a certain bridge, Monica was brought down from the motorcycle while her suspected arsonist  removed her wrapper with which she was blindfolded after which they poured fuel on her and set her ablaze. They were said to be watching Monica while she was burnt by the fire. When they discovered that she had been severely burnt and that she would not survive, she was abandoned but with the little life in her, she managed to roll herself into a nearby pond and avail herself with the water to quench the fire. Monica later got out of the water when the flame on her body had gone off. She decided to hide herself in an uncompleted town hall at Enyibuchiri building for shame that she was naked with burnt patches all over her body. She was in the uncompleted town hall building when she was discovered by farmers after which, arrangement was made and she was rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki,  FETHA.

When our correspondent visited her in her hospital bed, Monica was so weak, speechless, and with burnt patches on her body.

Her younger brother, Sunday Nwigbo who was looking after her told our reporter that her sister got married to Paul 12 years ago.

According to him, Paul impregnated his sister when she was a student at Enyi Secondary School, Enyibuchiri at Alike Ikwo in Ikwo Local Government Area, adding that she had four female children for Paul, who he said had not paid Monica’s pride price but often threatened to kill her whenever the issue was raised and for not giving her a male child.

He further said that Paul had earlier sent his wife parking on 23rd March, 2014 that he would not marry her again during which the case was reported to the Ebonyi State Family Law Centre for intervention before she was set ablaze. Mr. Nwaigbo Sunday thanked the wife of the Ebonyi State government, Mrs. Josephine Elechi for her prompt intervention and coming to the aid of her sister.
