Bala Mubarak Released,18 Days After Family Members Hospitalized Him For Not Believing In God

A Muslim family in Kano recently went seeking for psychiatric help for 29-year old Mubarak Bala due to his atheist belief  but the good news is that Bala Mubarak is  now a free man after spending 18 days hospital imprisonment

Bala, who is a Chemical Engineering graduate from a Nigerian university, showed traits  of being an atheist; an act which his family severely frowned at.

His worried family desperately bundled him to the popular Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for medical  help , The disappointed Family where informed by a doctor at the hospital  that Bala was mentally sane and had no need for psychiatric treatment.

His family still  went ahead to lock him up at the Aminu Kano Teaching hospital; a hospital incarceration which lasted for 18 days.

Bala was however able to  bring  his case  to public domain   through emails and social media influence   before his phone was confiscated and taken away from him

In a personal statement, Bala wrote  that " those who have made threats against me for renouncing Islam and being an atheist  , I urge you to reason and learn to tolerate opinions other than yours".

Due to the ongoing  Industrial action embarked by Nigerian doctors, Bala was  released by the hospital management   as there was no medical personnel  on duty   to attend to him.

The International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) who played a  big role  in getting him out of  the hospital imprisonment  in a press release disclosed that Bala was wrongly medicated while at the hospital.

The IHEU, along with other activists who had been pushing for his release, agreed not to issue the news of his release until he was in a safe location.

The charity said: 'There are still deep concerns for Mubarak's safety in a part of the country where accusations of "apostasy" can be deadly.'

At the time he was detained, IHEU spokesman Bob Churchill said: 'It appears that a warped notion of family honour is the motivation to pressure Mubarak in this appalling manner, to conform to religious views that he simply doesn’t hold. This is an abhorrent violation of his freedom of thought and belief.'
While detained, Mr Bala told online he was detained because of a 'personality change' after he became atheist despite having been raised a Muslim.
Activists instructed a Kano-based lawyer and campaigned for the hospital to reassess his case and for the government to call for his release.

Bala is currently in a secret location  due to a varying number of threats to his life from family members and the general public .
