FUNNY WORLD: My Friend Lured Me Into Kidnapping But Devil Made Me To Agree- Kidnap Suspect
It is amazing what we attribute to Devil in this part of the world, even when our greed leads us to commit crime, we still attribute it to Devil. Read the funny report of an arrested kidnap suspect who claim it was Devil that made him to join Kidnap Gang
THE Special Anti-Robbery squad of Ondo State Police command recorded success in overrunning a kidnap gang operating within the state recently when it arrested two suspected members of a four-man gang which allegedly abducted a cashier working with Akoko North West Local Government on September 28. The victim was rescued a week after.
The two suspects, Charles Okafor and Agidi Wale were reportedly arrested by the SARS operatives in Oka Akoko and Akungba Akoko respectively on Saturday, October 5, and their victim rescued unhurt. Recovered from the suspect was one cut-to-size locally-made barrel gun. Two other suspects, Obinna and Omo Jesu are currently on the run.
Crime Reports gathered that the cashier (names withheld) was coming from church in his car with his family members along Ikare-Akungba Akoko road when the armed kidnappers attacked him. They were said to have blindfolded him and therafter drove him to an unknown place where he was kept in the bush until he was rescued.
One of the arrested suspects, Okafor, who worked with the brother of the victim, was alleged to have masterminded the kidnap by giving information about the cashier’s movement.
In an interview with Crime Reports, Okafor, who disclosed that he hailed from Imo State but lives in Oka Akoko, Ondo State, confessed to have carried out the kidnap of the cashier at Araromi area of Akungba Akoko with others, but said that he was pushed into it by his kinsman, Obinna, who is on the run. Okafor, a pillar designer married with a son, disclosed that “there is a man who is my townsman. His name is Obinna Ngbeneje. He called me that he had no work to do so I invited him to Oka Akoko to join me.
“He introduced kidnapping to me and I told him I had not done it before. He gave me assurance that there would be no problem, saying that he had people who would join him in the operation. He asked me about my boss but I initially refused, saying that he had been of financial assistance to me several times.
“But Obinna kept troubling me. There is one Wale who is my friend. One day, when we went to the farm, he told me he had a gun, so, when I told Obinna that I didn’t have a gun that we could use for the kidnapping, he said I should not worry since Wale had one. Obinna met Wale through me and we all used to play together.
“On the day we went to kidnap the man, Obinna called one Omo Jesu, an Igbo guy to join us. Four of us went on foot for the operation – Obinna, Omo Jesu, Wale and I. We held only one gun. When we got to the man’s house on September 28, at about 8p.m., we lurked in the dark by his fence. As soon as we saw him approaching home from church in his car, the gang pounced on him but I ran away.
“The remaining three kidnapped the man with his car and hid him at Ayegunle area of Akungba, abandoning the car somewhere. I was later called on phone that they got N200,000 but they said they were not going to give me anything because I ran away. Out of pity, Wale gave me N2,000 from his share of the money that was with the victim in his car on the day he was kidnapped. I learnt that they later collected an additional N300,000.
I was at home when my boss called me to come and do some work. That was how I was arrested by the police. Wale was also arrested but Obinna and Omo Jesu are at large.”
When asked the reason he decided to join a kidnap gang, Okafor said it was Obinna who pushed him into the criminal act. “Even at that, it was the devil that made one to agree, because I had never been involved in such a thing before”, he said.
Confirming the story, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Wole Ogodo said that the Commissioner of Police, Patrick Dukumor was determined to rid the state of criminals, commending the efforts of the SARS operatives in rescuing the victim and arresting two suspects. He added that efforts were on to arrest the fleeing suspects.
