Nigerian troops on Wednesday foiled a suicide attack targeting soldiers on stop-and-search duty in Gombe State, the defence headquarters said.
In a statement, military spokesperson, Chris Olukolade, a Major General, said the suicide bomber failed to detonate his explosive despite ramming his vehicle into a military check point in Bajoga Local Government.
“His attempt to escape also failed as he was brought down by vigilant soldiers when he tried to flee after hitting a military Armoured Personnel Carrier with his IED-laden Honda car,” Mr. Olukolade said.
He also said the explosives which failed to detonate have been evacuated and handed to the police.
Bajoga is home to Ashaka Cement factory which recently came under attack by the extremist Boko Haram group.
In two separate raids, the insurgents made away with explosive materials used in the production of cement.
According to the Defence Headquarters statement, security forces have also raided the terrorists’ hideout in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State leading to the arrest of bomb-making experts who are already helping in the investigation into activities of bombers lately.
Kano, Gombe and of late Bauchi states have witnessed an upsurge in bomb attacks from Boko Haram.
Young female suicide bombers carried out most of the attacks.
One of the suicide bombers who failed in a mission to bomb Kantin Kwari market in Kano told reporters on Wednesday that she was trained for the mission in a bush near Kano.
She said she was handed over to Boko Haram by her parents.
Defence Headquarters said the arrest of the bomb-making experts Wednesday would yield useful clues.
“Troops deployed in all locations of the counter terrorism campaign have been directed to sustain the tempo of operations all through the period of seasonal celebrations and ensure that the intention of terrorists to attack civilian target while avoiding troops is duly frustrated,” the statement said
