Ireland Becomes First Country In The World To legalise Gay Marriage By Popular Vote

Yes supporters gather in Dublin Castle square as the referendum on same-sex marriage appears to have been approved by Irish voters.

Irish voters have decisively voted in favour of marriage equality, making Ireland the first country to do so through the ballot box.

Only one of the 43 constituencies voted against the proposal – Roscommon-South Leitrim – while the yes vote exceeded 70% in many parts of Dublin.

In total, 1,201,607 people voted in favour with 734,300 against, giving a majority of 467,307. The total valid poll was 1,935,907.

The no campaigners have paid tribute to their opponents, and the archbishop of Dublin has said the result should be a wake-up call for the Catholic church in Ireland

Referendums have previously been held in Croatia and Slovenia, and in both cases voters rejected legalising gay marriage. In Slovenia same-sex marriages were, however, legalised by parliament in March 2015
