The gun battle between a group of
policemen and some armed robbers in the early hours of Tuesday, October
13, 2015 turned deadly as a woman and her 18-month-old baby were hit by
the robbers’ stray bullets and died according to a report by Trent Online online Newspaper
The woman, identified as Mrs. Jane
Ndirieka and her baby were hit in their house by stray bullets from the
robbers shooting spree. The victim’s neighbours who spoke with our
correspondence at their 4th Avenue flat say that Mrs. Ndirieka was shot
twice in the chest and in the right shoulder while she carried her baby.
Her baby died on the spot while she was rushed to the hospital.
Trent Online correspondent exclusively from
investigations at the scene of the robbery that the bandits arrived on
three boats and berthed at the canal by the fresh fruits market on the
4th Avenue in Festac. They divided themselves into two groups.
Access Bank and Diamond Bank are located
between two junctions. Diamond Bank is close to the 4th Avenue by 5th
Avenue Junction while Access Bank is closer to the 4th Avenue by 23 Road
Junction. One group of the dare-devil robbers who dressed in military
fatigue set up a road block at the 4th Avenue by 5th Avenue Junction
while the other team set up a road block by the 4th Avenue by 23 Road
Junction.
Once they blocked the junction, they
began to shoot sporadically to scare off residents as they began to
break down the doors of the banks
.
The deceased woman and
her baby were inside their house with other family members and a friend
when the first bullet hit her right shoulder followed by a second one on
her chest.
She was
rushed to the General hospital for urgent treatment but unfortunately,
she died on the way due to the severity of the injuries.
Her baby who was in her arms as at the time she was hit by the bullets, died on the spot.
It was gathered that the
police were unable to get through the crime scene initially because of
the road blocks mounted at the 5th avenue junction by the robbers
.
The robbers shot a security man at Diamond Bank, during the encounter.
The security
man whose identity was withheld was rushed to the nearby hospital where
he is said to be responding to treatment after an x-ray was conducted
on him to locate the bullet.
Two cars were also damaged as the robbers threw explosives which according to eye-witnesses, looked like bottles.
It was also
gathered that the robbers snatched two vehicles with which they carried
the yet-to-be specified amount of money from the banks.
They drove through the market
towards the canal to where their boats were, and then escaped in the
three boats, shortly before the Police Area commander arrived the scene.
