A legal practitioner in Abuja, Festus Keyamo, on Tuesday appealed to
the Federal Government to reopen the case of late Toba Falode, who was
allegedly murdered in Dubai.
Toba, son of sport commentator, Aisha Falode, died when he fell from
the 17th floor of a storey building on February 15. His mother, after
speaking to Toba’s schoolmates, believes he was pushed.
Mr. Keyamo made the appeal during an interactive session with the House
of Representatives Committee on Diaspora. He expressed dismay with the
conduct of the Dubai Police in handling the matter.
“There is a deliberate effort to keep Toba’s case out of the limelight,” he said.
He said that under Dubai law, there was no right for private
prosecution, a situation he said, made it difficult for any counsel of
the slain young man to pursue his case.
According to him, he has appealed to the Dubai Office of Public
Prosecution, OPP, and sent a letter to that effect to the Nigerian
Embassy in that country.
He urged the committee to prevail on the federal government to ensure that the case was not swept under the carpet.
In a remark, Aisha Falode, said she suspected fraud after she discovered that Toba was not alone when he fell.
“’We are for justice. And to get it, we have petitioned the House,
written to the president and addressed a press conference. We are
clamouring that Toba must get justice,” Ms. Falode said.
She said that there was a need for the case to be reopened.
Ms. Falode appealed to Nigerian embassies abroad to avail citizens
with information on the legal complexities of the respective countries
where they operate.
This, she said, would afford them with the opportunity to know what obtained in such countries.
Also in a remark, the chairman of the House committee on Diaspora,
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, assured the deceased person’s mother that the
committee always stood on the principle that all Nigerian citizens
abroad must be protected.
“We will do everything to ensure that Toba gets justice,” she said.
