Chuka Umunna Steps Out With His Glamorous Lawyer Girlfriend Alice Sullivan

Speaking on the BBC's Andrew Marr show, Chuka Umunna said: 'In my view the Labour party succeeds and does best when it marries together its compassion for people who can't provide for themselves'

Chuka Umunna, the shadow business secretary, has appeared in public with his girlfriend for the first time moments before setting out his stall for the leadership of the Labour Party. Mr Umunna was pictured walking hand-in-hand with Alice Sullivan, an employment lawyer, as he went to the studio of the Andrew Marr show. During his appearance Mr Umunna became the first senior Labour figure to say the party was wrong to run a deficit before the financial crisis and condemned Ed Miliband’s attacks on “wealth creators”.

Until now Mr Umunna has kept his girlfriend’s identity a secret, and their first public appearance together will spark suggestions that the move was carefully choreographed to coincide with his leadership bid. Speaking about his girlfriend, he has previously said: ‘I just switch off. I’m not bad at that. It’s very hard not to remain wired, but one of the things is having two phones. “And just having one which is family, girlfriend, friends. If I’m on holiday I will just switch off the other phone, that’s quite important.’

Asked if he has plans for marriage, he replied: “I think she deserves to know first”.Miss Sullivan is an associate at Lewis Silkin, an employment law firm. Her profile says: “I advise employers on a wide range of employment issues. When I’m not in the office I enjoy going to the theatre, travelling abroad, catching up with friends and weekends in the countryside.”
