The Russian model has followed in the footsteps of Michelle Obama, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Leona Lewis by taking a selfie to get the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls trending – referring to the 276 Nigerian teenagers who have been kidnapped by anti-Western education terrorists.
But while spreading the word about the horrific event is commendable, Irina's approach to promoting the cause has seen fans calling her "disrespectful" and "self-indulgent".
In a selfie posted to her Instagram, the 28-year-old holds up a card reading "#BringBackOurGirls!!!" – while posing topless.
Irina, who is dating Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo, gazes seductively at the camera, blocking her assets from view with the strategically placed piece of paper.
Another outraged Instagrammer wrote: "She's just doing this to promote herself", while other messages asked would she do the same for 9/11 or tsunami victims.
However, some supporters of the Sport Illustrated beauty claimed that her half-naked picture would gain more awareness for the campaign.
The social media campaign is demanding the return of 276 schoolgirls who were abducted by terrorist group Boko Haram in order to sell them into the sex trade.
This is no "selfie" pls. Selfie, as it implies, is when u r the one taking picture of urself.
