On Saturday, March 28, Senator Andy Uba, had cause to thank God for making one of his dreams come true, as he won the election, under the Peoples Democratic Party, to represent Anambra South Senatorial District in the upper chamber of the National Assembly.
However, it is strange that while he is still in this joyous mood, some
of his family members are calling for a showdown with him. Society
Happenings gathered that his brothers, Ugochukwu and the popular
Anambra political godfather, Chris Uba, have now pitched tent with his
opponent at the polls, Ernest Ndukwe of APGA, who came second in the
result declared by INEC.
The APGA candidate, who rejected the result declared by INEC, has vowed to challenge Uba’s victory at the tribunal.
What is, however, confounding is that his brother, Chris, is alleged to be the financial muscle behind Ndukwe.
The smouldering war, it was gathered, started when Andy, who was
governor of Anambra before he was sacked in 2007, went against the
family agreement.
It was learnt that before the party primaries that threw up Andy Uba as
the PDP Candidate, Chris Uba had shown interest in contesting for the
same Anambra South Senatorial seat.
However, in the build-up to the 2015 general elections, the Uba family
unanimously agreed that Andy Uba should vacate the senate seat for his
younger brother, Chris, while Andy give the governorship seat another
trial.
Andy reportedly agreed, but after losing out at the Anambra
governorship primaries, he made a U-turn and insisted he would go for
the Senate. Even after several pleas by some elders in the family, he
refused to yield to the earlier agreement.
The source confirmed further that the crisis, which is tearing the
family apart, has become a subject of discussion in the community.
It is common knowledge that Chris Uba is the godfather of Anambra PDP.
First, he installed his eldest brother, Senator Ugochukwu Uba, as
Senator for Anambra South between 2003 and 2007. He later made his
brother, Andy, governor of the state in 2007 until he was removed by the
court, thereby paving way for Peter Obi of APGA to take over the seat
as governor. Consequently, Andy, in 2011, went to the senate.
