Jubilation As Jigawa Airport Records Maiden Flight
Wild celebrations erupted yesterday in Jigawa State as the first plane took off from the new Dutse International Airport with Governor Sule Lamido and other government officials on board.
Thousands of people from within and outside the state gathered at the airport to witness the historical event in the 23-year-old state. During the test flight, Lamido and some top government officials used a small Airbus which accommodated 20 passengers to travel to Saudi Arabia for the 2013 hajj exercise. Lamido described the occasion as a testimony to how Jigawa was developing on unimaginable speed like the Asian Tigers. He said during the 2011 campaign,
President Goodluck Jonathan promised to construct an airport in Jigawa and three other capital projects, but, two years after, there was no sign that he would fulfil the promise.
The governor stated that they would not allow the president to commission the airport until he refunded the money the state spent on the project. He promised to ensure the completion of the airport in the next four months. In his keynote address, the chairman of Dutse Capital Development Authority (DCDA), Alhaji Bashir Aminu Yariman Dutse, said the contract for the project was awarded to two companies - Dantata and Sawoe and CGC – and work commenced in November 2012. -
