A housewife, Mrs Sinmiat Omowumi Ogunbanjo, has been battered by her husband, Jimmy Omotalabo Ogunbanjo, after she reportedly rejected custody of a baby delivered by her husband’s mistress in Ogun State, western Nigeria. PM News reports
The incident happened on Sallah day at their residence, New Site, Ikangba, Imodi road, Ijebu Ode in Ogun State.
Trouble started for Omowumi after her husband, Jimmy, who is a staff of Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Abeokuta, in Ogun State, returned home with a two-year old baby.
It was gathered that her husband lives in Abeokuta where he works while Omowumi who is his legitimate wife lives in Ijebu Ode with their four children and family members.
The 40-year-old Jimmy who had returned to Ijebu Ode for the recent Muslim festival informed Omowumi that he impregnated his mistress in Abeokuta who delivered the baby he came with.
He told her that he picked up the baby from his mistress and brought the child to her to nurse because the mistress could not take proper care of the baby.
Omowumi, who was infuriated after what her husband told her, asked him to return the baby to the mother because she was not ready to nurse or take custody of the baby.
P.M.NEWS learnt that some members of the family including her mother-in law, Ganiyat Ogunbanjo, pleaded with her to take custody of the baby.
She still refused and told Jimmy that since he had other women besides her, he should take the baby to any of them to nurse.
Her response resulted in exchange of words and in the process Jimmy and other members of the family present allegedly battered Omowumi and threw her out of her matrimonial home.
She was seriously injured and had scars on her body.
.
According to her, the police who were supposed to assist her disappointed her also.
It was also gathered that when Omowumi went to the police station and reported her predicament and assault, the police told her it was a family matter and sent her away.
Following the development, Omowumi contacted a lawyer, Barrister, Olufemi Ajiboso who petitioned the Ogun State Commissioner of Police and the management of FRSC Ogun State Command, her husband’s employer.
Ajiboso, who confirmed the incident, said what happened to Omowumi was a clear case of inhumanity to man and an assault not only on the victim but women in general.
He said Omowumi informed him that her husband had subjected her to all sorts of ill treatment since he married her and she had been enduring it because of her children.
He said that he had instruction from Omowumi to write the petitions about the criminal conduct against her and to institute a suit for divorce.
Ogunbanjo could not be reached at the time of filing this report as his phone was switched off when our reporter phoned him several times.
